ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) TO SERVE HUMANITY

Throughout history, man has always searched for an invention that could mimic the human mind in its way of thinking.  Artists, writers, filmmakers and game developers alike have tried to find a logical explanation for the concept of artificial intelligence.  In 1872, Samual Butler spoke in his novel “Erihon” (1872) about machines and the great role they will play in developing humanity and moving the world to development and prosperity.

Over time, AI has been present only in science fiction.  Sometimes it highlights the potential benefits of AI for humanity and its bright aspects, and at other times it highlights the negative aspects expected from it and it is portrayed as a fierce enemy of humanity who intends to usurp civilisation and control it !

In 2018, AI became a reality not a fantasy, and no longer occupies a place only in the world of popular culture.  The year 2018 was a major shift for AI.  This technology has grown significantly on the ground until it has become a major tool at the core of all sectors.

AI has emerged from research laboratories and from pages of science fiction novels to become part of our daily lives, from helping us navigate cities and avoid traffic jams, all the way to using virtual assistants to help us perform various tasks.  Today, our use of AI has become rooted in…FOR THE COMMON GOOD OF SOCIETY.

Why do critics fear that AI is dangerous?

With few regulations in place for the use of artificial intelligence, experts have warned that its rapid development could be dangerous. Some have even said that AI research should be stopped.

Last May, Geoffrey Hinton - widely viewed as the godfather of AI - submitted his resignation from Google, warning that intelligent chatbots could soon become smarter than humans !

Later that month, the US-based Center for Artificial Intelligence Security published a statement on its website, endorsed by dozens of prominent technology specialists.

The statement stated that the use of AI may generate false information that would destabilise society, and in the worst-case scenario, experts said that these machines may become so intelligent that they take over, which may lead to the extinction of humanity !!!

The head of the European Union's technology sector, Margrethe Vestager, told the BBC that the ability of AI to amplify bias or discrimination has become a major concern and an urgent reason to find a solution.

For Vestager, what worries her in particular is the role that AI can play in making decisions that affect people’s livelihoods, such as loan applications, adding that there is “definitely a risk” that artificial intelligence can be used to influence elections.

Others, including technology pioneer Martha Lane Fox, say we shouldn't feel "hysterical and panicky" about AI, and she has urged more reasoned discussions about AI's capabilities.
