The Arab countries and Europe are the most economically affected regions of the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  According to the international organisation, the repercussions of the pandemic on the economic sector are worse than the 2008-2009 financial crisis.

According to a new report by the International Labour Organisation, the world is expected to see jib cuts for about 200 million full-time employees in the nest three months alone.  A warning that comes about three weeks after the organisation expected 25 million jobs to be threatened by Covid-19, especially after imposing complete or partial closures in many countries, and this had an impact on about 2.7 billion workers, or 4 out of every 5 workforce in the world.

The same source added that although all regions in the world are suffering from the crisis caused by the virus, Arab countries and Europe have witnessed the worst impact in the field of employment in relative terms.  The biggest losses in terms of numbers are concentrated in the countries of Asia and the Pacific, which is the most populated area in the world.

Guy Rider, Director-General of the International Labor Organisation, said in a statement from Geneva that at the beginning of the year and before the outbreak of Covid-19 in the world, 190 million people joined the ranks of unemployment.

He added that with the shock caused by the virus, it is “obvious to the eye” that the world of employment is experiencing “an absolutely extraordinary slump” due to the impact of the pandemic and the measures taken to deal with it.

When it comes to the most affected sectors, workers in four sectors are most affected by the disease and the decline in production: the food and hotel sector (144 million workers), the wholesale and retail sector (582 million), the business and management services sector (157 million) and the manufacturing sector (463 million).  The Director of the Labour Organisation indicated that all these sectors constitute 37.5% of global employment and workers in these sectors are now feeling more than others the severity of the impact of the pandemic on them.

Frontline Workers must be protected…

There are 136 million people working in the health and social professions around the world who are on the front lines and the war against COVID-19.  Mr Ryder stressed that the biggest threat facing the sector is the coronavirus.  He said “we have to ensure the protection of these workers and the provision of appropriate preventive tools for them”.  Overall, when evaluating the second quarter of 2020 (April to June), the organisation believes that a 6.7% decrease in the number of hours worked is likely.
